Helping Homeless Families
When there is exposure to poverty, abuse, and neglect, a child’s development can be severely damaged and/or delayed. Young children living in extreme poverty are especially at risk for developmental regression and emotional trauma. They suffer from poor living conditions, domestic violence, unstable family units, a lack of environmental stimulation, and an absence of basic needs such as food, clothing, shelter, and basic medical care. Children in their first years of life are particularly vulnerable because the child’s mind and body are developing during these critical years, forming the foundation for emotional growth and cognitive development.
At the Alcove, children develop social and interpersonal skills, enjoy supervised play, learn basic educational skills important to their long-term development, and are afforded the opportunity to blossom in a stable and nurturing environment. Unlike most childcare centers in Dallas, the Alcove provides all basic essentials such as diapers, formula, food, clothing, and shoes at no cost to the families or their referring shelters.
Without reliable and accessible free childcare, homeless parents with young children would be unable to seek or continue employment, complete an education, or attain permanent housing.
